Another round of bargaining—now in mediation—and management has made very little movement. Management is still not budging on what our bargaining team has started referring to as “the big three” takeaways: dismantling seniority rights during layoff, ending overtime after eight hours, and undermining contractor accountability. Their economic package—0% first year, 1% second year, 1.5% at the end of the contract—remains unacceptable. Additionally, the management team proposal makes us responsible for any increase in health care premiums over 5%, and includes NO step increases.
For comparison, DAS state workers recently settled a tentative agreement that includes two full steps, two COLAs of 1.5% and 2%, holds the line on a 5% premium share (and no pass-through of premium increases to members), and no threats to job security!
It’s important to understand that state workers weren’t just handed a fair agreement—they stood up and fought for it through hundreds of community and worksite actions, and by making it clear to the state that they would do whatever it took—including striking—to get the contract that they deserve. During bargaining at Western Oregon University last week, more than 100 SEIU members sent the message that they won’t back down in our fight for a fair contract.
In the coming weeks, you’ll be asked to attend meetings, participate in actions, and engage in a variety of other efforts to communicate to OUS that classified staff have sacrificed enough. Please start today by calling and emailing the Chancellor and your University President to tell them to remove the take-aways and offer us a fair contract!
The next bargaining session: July 31st and August 1st – OSU MU.
