Johnny has been a tireless advocate for classified employees. He’s served leadership roles on the SEIU executive team for years, and currently serves as our local bargaining representative. He listens to all voices of classified staff and incorporates it into his work as chief delegate. He’s been an MLK award recipient. He’s a union steward and a leader in his workplace. He’s co-director of the campus ops diversity committee, and serves on the campus wide diversity committee. He’s single handedly led the way for employees to provide feedback during the upcoming classification and compensation changes for our members. He looks out for all of our veterans working on campus. He’s a steward and he ensures that everyone on this campus knows they are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect.
Most importantly, Johnny fights on behalf of employees that need him the most. You may not know the name of the custodian who empties your garbage can at two in the morning, but Johnny makes sure they have representation.
Johnny regularly comes in off the clock, attending meetings that are held when he should be sleeping. He often comes in to do work for this University that he isn’t even paid for. He comes in anyways because he cares about this University and the people who work here.
While soliciting nominations for this award, Johnny was the first to ask the question, “when has anyone working with the custodial crew ever won an award for anything on this campus?” We’re fixing that right now. Johnny has been a leader and a champion determined to make this University a better place. We proudly present this year’s Classified Staff Leadership award to Johnny Earl.
