What To Do If You’ve Received a Layoff Notice

First, know that time is of the essence. The contract states that within five days of receiving the notice of layoff, the employee should contact UO Human Resources, indicating their desire to exercise layoff rights.
The University shall then endeavor to place the employee in a new job according to the following order:

  • Vacant Position (current and future)
  • Bumping Process (according to seniority)
  • Demotion to a position in a salary range as close to his/her current salary range as possible.

If these options are not feasible, the employee will be laid off and placed on a recall list for 1-2 years depending on circumstances. (There are of course more details and specifics in the Contract.)

In all cases, we recommend contacting the Steward’s Hotline or Member Resource Center. The Union has many stewards who are versed in these situations and they are here to help you navigate the system.

More details about your right in this situation are outlined in Article 48 of our Collective Bargaining Agreement.
