Why Join a Union?

In belonging to SEIU 503, you share your strength in the work place with your fellow members.  Without a union, employers have almost all the rights. They can change your pay and working conditions at any time as long as they do not violate certain laws, like the minimum wage. Any benefits you receive are at the discretion of your employer.

In collective bargaining, your benefits and working conditions are spelled out in your union contract. You have the additional benefit of union representation if you have concerns or complaints regarding your working conditions. Your  union steward is an employee like yourself who is trained in hearing and helping to mediate workplace disputes. The power of your union is in our membership. The more members we have, the stronger we are.

Our union is worker driven. That means that your fellow classified workers run the union. The officers and committee members are rank and file workers. They spend their own time conducting union business on your behalf. We are supported by our union organizers.  The power of your union is in our membership. The more members we have, the stronger we are. It is every members responsibility to invite and encourage fellow workers to become members. If you need help in approaching a workplace fair-share worker, call your Membership Coordinator, work area contact, or other officer.
